Imran Khan calls for mid-term elections, Pak govt's en bloc resignation
Karachi News.Net Monday 23rd November, 2009 (ANI)
Lahore, Nov. 23 : In the wake of many PPP leaders being enlisted as National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) beneficiaries, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has demanded the Pakistan Government resign en bloc and hold mid-term elections.
Addressing a press conference here at his residence, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief pointed out that prosecution of the NRO beneficiaries by the current government was difficult as many government officials themselves were NRO-benefited.
The News quoted Khan as saying that if the current setup was sincere in fair accountability of the NRO beneficiaries, it should establish an independent body for the purpose as the incumbent rulers could not hold their own colleagues accountable.
Khan also questioned the constitutional immunity to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari under Article 248.
"How could a person accused of serious crimes hold the highest public office?" he said.
Furthermore, Khan said his party was not trying to destabilise the democracy, as mid-term polls were part of democratic process and not a conspiracy against democracy.
He added that the masses could not allow 'the corrupt rulers' to loot the country for five more years. Email this story to a friend
