The German parliament has celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The German parliament has celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Former Polish Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek, who currently heads the European Parliament, spoke to members about the works of European civil rights activists who helped end the divide between the Eastern and Western sectors in Germany and Europe.

Buzek, who himself was an activist at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, worked in the Polish Solidarnosc union which became the first mass opposition movement in Communist Eastern Europe.

He reminded the German parliamentarians that his group had rallied shipbuilders to strike in Gdansk, saying: “It all began in front of Gdansk shipyard, and it ended in front of the Brandenburg Gate.”

Buzek said the reunification of Europe was made possible by the destruction of the Berlin Wall and between former enemies, Germany and Poland.

The parliamentary speeches were attended by members of the German government and parliament, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as well as numerous diplomats.
