Plastics industry booming in India
Karachi News.Net Saturday 24th October, 2009
In India, plastic goods consumption is expected to double in the next three years.
The Indian Plastics Federation, meeting in Kolkata, has assessed plastic usage in India at around 6 kilogram per annum, which is a relatively low figure compared to the world average of 25 kilograms.
The federation said the basic demand for plastic would be boosted over the next years by the housing, automobile and retail sectors.
Annually around six million tonnes of plastic is produced in the country, with the plastic packaging sector growing fastest.
Federation officials said they hoped the plastic industry could add 1.5 million tonnes to the existing capacity over the next six months.
India's Minister of State for Urban Development, Saugata Roy, who spoke at the meeting, said he would watch for plastic industry players to take responsibility for plastic waste management. Email this story to a friend
