Russian Navy finds missing ship
Karachi News.Net Tuesday 18th August, 2009
The Russian Navy has caught up with eight men who they have now accused of hijacking a freighter.
The suspected hijackers were detained by a Russian naval ship off Cape Verde.
The freighter, the Arctic Sea, had been boarded by the pirates near Sweden and forced from its intended route to sail to West Africa.
The 15 Russian crew members were found to be safe when Russian naval personnel boarded the ship.
The crew told naval officials that their vessel had been boarded by masked men on July 24th near the Swedish island of Gotland.
The invaders allegedly tied up the crew, beat them and claimed they were looking for drugs.
The hijackers then forced the crew to change course and turned off the freighter's navigation equipment before passing through the English Channel, where the last known radio contact was made on July 28th.
The Arctic Sea had been engaged to take a cargo of lumber to Algeria. Email this story to a friend
