Kashmir elections going ahead despite Muslim objections
Karachi News.Net Monday 17th November, 2008
Elections for a state government for Indian administered Kashmir have been surrounded by boycott calls and minor violence.
Elections have begun in 10 of 87 constituencies, where people have been prevented from leaving their homes due to police imposed curfews.
The curfew has prevailed in the Kashmir Valley as a heavy deployment of police and paramilitary troops restricted the movement of people.
Kashmir has seen some of largest demonstrations against Indian rule in decades.
Muslim separatists on Monday scuffled with police, who were trying to stop a protest march against the elections in the town of Bandipora.
In recent weeks more than two dozen separatist leaders have been taken unto custody under the Public Safety Act that allows for detentions of up to two years without any trial.
Anti-India sentiment is all pervasive in majority Muslim Kashmir, where most people favor independence from India or a merger with Pakistan.
Both countries claim Kashmir in its entirety.
