Suspended Pak Chief Justice Chaudhry reaches Lahore HC, given unprecedented welcome

Lahore, May 6 : Suspended Pakistan Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry's caravan reached the Lahore High Court and was given a rousing welcome on Sunday.

Lawyers, political workers and other people enthusiastically received Chief Justice Chaudhry when he reached Lahore High Court after a 24-hour-long journey from Islamabad.

The President of the Lahore High Court Bar Association, Ahsan Bhawan, was quoted by The News as saying that 20 retired and 17 serving judges were present to receive Chaudhry.

Former Pakistan President Muhammad Rafique Tarar also received and greeted him.

Prominent jurist Justice (Rtd) Javed Iqbal his spouse Nasira Javed, central leaders of Pakistan Peoples Party, Muslim League (N), MMA and Tehrik-e-Insaf were also present for the reception.

Lawyers' community, political workers, activists and leaders, besides representatives of the traders' community and ordinary citizens gave an unprecedented welcome to the suspended Chief Justice, who is widely considered as the symbol of resistance against the Musharraf regime.

Chaudhry reached Data Darbar where he was accorded a historic welcome by Lahorites right from the outskirts of the city to the Lahore High Court Building.

The entire north of the city was bustling with life late into the night. Lahore residents were waiting for Chaudhry's caravan since Saturday afternoon. The atmosphere was electrifying and supporters of judge raised loud slogans in his favour.

A large screen was installed outside the Lahore High Court to allow the masses to hear and see Chaudhry.

Chaudhry said that the people of Pakistan had come to the rescue of the judiciary and would uphold the sanctity of the Constitution. The matter of the March 9 presidential reference was now in the people's court, he said.

Stringent security measures were in place during the interaction.
